Trick Play

The term "trick play" refers to using the transport controls such as pause, instant replay, rewind etc. This is called "trick play" because these operations can also be performed whilst watching Live TV.

The timebar at the bottom of the screen shows an hour slot in Live TV, and the duration of the programme when playing back a recording. Small white markers indicate 15 minute boundries. The green filled area is the portion of the time shown that TiVo has a recording of (in Live TV this is a 30 minute rolling buffer, when playing back a recording the bar should be completely filled unless you are watching the programme before it has finished recording).

Whilst watching Live TV or a recording, you can use the transport controls on the remote to navigate to different points in TiVo's recording (the green filled area in the time bar). The white bar shows the current position with the time above.

Back (RW): rewinds towards the start of the recording. There are three rewind speeds - keep pressing the back button to go faster. When you press play to resume, on the faster speeds TiVo will jump back slightly to compensate for you overshooting the actual point that you wanted to stop (since the speed is so fast you would need to have very fast reactions!).

Fwd (FW): fast forwards towards the end of the recording. There are three fast forward speeds - keep pressing the Fwd button to go faster. When you press play to resume, on the faster speeds TiVo will jump back slightly to compensate for you overshooting the actual point that you wanted to stop (since the speed is so fast you would need to have very fast reactions!).

Pause: pauses playback. In Live TV you can pause for up to 30 minutes (the length of the buffer). If you need to pause for more than this then tell TiVo to record the programme.

Play: resumes playback. You can also press this to display the time bar (press the Clear button to remove the time bar or wait a few seconds for it to disappear).

Slow: plays back in slow motion.

Instant Replay: jumps back eight seconds and resumes playback.

Skip to end: moves to the end of the green shaded recorded area. During playback of a recording only (not available in Live TV) the following two extra operations are available: (i) Press the skip to end button whilst at the end to move to the start of the programme. (ii) Press the skip to end button during fast forward or rewind to skip to the next 15 minute marker.
