Description: NICAM Stereo
sound is not decoded properly, I hear clicks and pops or receive only mono sound.
This problem only seems to affect viewing when using TiVo's
built in TV tuner to watch analogue terrestrial programmes. Users have reported
a clicking and popping sound as though a weak signal is present. The NICAM stereo
sound is not decoded properly - only mono sound can be heard.
Aerial attenuators have been reported to stop the pops and clicks
in some cases, but it is thought that this only forces the box into mono.
This does not affect viewers using the SCART input as their source.
Fixed: TiVo
have made some improvements to the NICAM decoding software in the
1.5.2 release. A free hardware modification is expected for all
customers shortly which will completely cure any problems. TiVo
say: "Some customers have reported problems while receiving
NICAM audio broadcasts. TiVo is investigating this issue and will
also be offering a solution to this during the Spring--in April
and May. Check back on this
page regularly for an update on this, or visit the TiVo Community
at http://www.tivocommunity.com.".
UPDATE 11th July 2001: TiVo say: "As many of you know,
we have discovered that a minor adjustment to the tuner in the TiVo
can improve reception/detection of NICAM when the aerial signal
is weak. This is not a flaw in the system, as the recorder can and
does detect NICAM when the signal is strong. This is an adjustment
that improves NICAM detection. In some cases, an upgraded aerial
may be required if the adjustment is not enough. To receive this
adjustment, please call customer support to schedule a visit from
a technician. Customer support have all of the details, but I believe
you will have to give up your recorder for a couple of days while
the modification is performed. You should not require a swapout,
and you should not have to repeat guided setup or lose any of your
programming. Sorry for the inconvenience, but hopefully this should
help improve audio quality for people using terrestrial sources
with NICAM. You should be able to receive this modification regardless
of whether your warranty period has expired. " Discussed
